Our Explorer Collection wool blankets are inspired by outdoor adventures. These are the perfect wool blankets for adding a layer of insulation during chilly nights under the stars, getting cozy at the campsite, or storing in your vehicle for emergency preparedness.
QUALITY AND DURABILITY
From the cabin to the great outdoors, our blankets are there to keep you comfortable and warm. This blanket is woven with 80% Merino wool / 20% nylon polyester blend. And with our large 66″ x 90″ size, you can fit more than just yourself in there. Please note, because of the elasticity of wool fibre, there may be up to a 5% +/- variance in dimension.
THE BETTER WEAVE
The Explorer Collection wool blankets are woven using a twill weave. Soils and stains are less noticeable due in part to the subtle diagonal texture. We use a long staple that is tightly spun to minimize poking and itching.
FINISHING TOUCH
Our Explorer Collection wool blankets have a milled finish, which means there is inter-fiber felting and fabric consolidation, thereby creating a denser blanket. The edging of this blanket is double-stitched using a thick polyester thread intended to withstand years of use.
WHAT’S THAT SMELL?
Well…it’s wool! Lanolin oil is found naturally in sheep wool and may be noticeable by those with an acute sense of smell. Although rare to pick up on, this scent is a testament to the wool’s purity. Please note: Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company blankets have not been treated with a chemical flame retardant.

Great blanket for the money
What a good blanket for the money. Good size, looks great, and the material is great. I use it for sleeping under as I don’t like duvets. It’s warm enough to keep me warmmon colder nights but with it being wool it stops me from overheating even on warmer nights. Seems hard wearing so far too and the feel of it is really good.

A superb blanket
I have a bit of a thing for merino wool; it’s like nature’s own technical fabric. So when I decided I wanted a new blanket, of course it had to be merino.And I’m not disappointed. It’s impressively warm, and it feels sturdy.I see in the reviews that some people have complained about a smell. If there ever was a problem, it’s been resolved. When the blanket first came out of its packaging, there was a trace of a chemical odor which dissipated over a couple of days. Now, the only odour left is the faint odor of lanolin, which is a smell so inoffensive that aromatherapists use lanolin as a base for making creams. I also asked someone else with a better nose that mine to give it a sniff, and she said it was fine.

I bought this for my elderly Dad. He suffers with the cold.He loves this blanket, its not to heavy for his bed and keeps him very warm. He liked it so much I’ve ordered him another one!

Returned for a refund
Initial observations were good. The blanket had a good weight to it and seemed well made.On closer inspection though there were several bits in the weave that were not wool or at least didn’t look like it. There were several areas on the blanket that had sharp bits and it just wasn’t as thick and warm as I had expected.Returned the blanket and I’m still waiting for a refund.

Nice large comfortable blanket. No itchiness. It also breathes well if you sweat. Initial lanolin smell that goes away after a bit of time, but not offensive. Wish it came in a bag as appeared in pic, but not a big deal. Appears to be of very good quality.

In this cold, wrapped in this nostalgic feeling blanket made me sleepy and calm in my couch. So warm and doesnât make you sweaty. Oh. The comfort of natural materials can never be mistaken. Bought a few of these to equip our vehicles with emergency blankets. I did a little research between this blanket and another, perhaps more popular, low-cost wool blanket that is very popular here on Amazon. I ultimately chose this one because these blankets are basically felted whereas the other kind was not, which means that these blankets will be better at blocking wind if needed, and may be warmer overall, as well. In fact I compared this blanket with several others in the same price range and felt that this one was the best. I find the merino wool to be very soft and smooth (for a cheap wool blanket… it is still rougher than some other non-wool materials). Unlike many other similar wool blankets, these blankets really are not itchy, which is really nice. I expect you could comfortably have this blanket against your skin, whereas my other simple military-style wool blankets are a bit itchy and really are better used on top of another blanket. Because of the felted texture I expect low shedding, which can be a problem for some wool blankets. Also, there is a faint but distinct smell to them. I don’t know if I’d describe it as a chemical smell, but it’s not exactly the sweet lanolin smell that naturally accompanies wool either. We are an all-natural household and I have pretty low tolerance for any chemical smells around me (scented laundry detergent, perfume, cigarettes, gasoline, etc., are all intolerable), and the smell on these blankets doesn’t bother me, even though I wouldn’t describe it as pleasant. But, it’s pretty easy to ignore and I think that it will dissipate with time.The weight is very good… nice and heavy like a wool blanket should be, and it looks very durable. I have a couple of other wool blankets, including one military issue, that aren’t felted, and therefore have a fuzzier surface. I have really abused my military blanket and it is still holding up great, but based on the feel of these new blankets I expect these Wooly Mammoth blankets to be even more durable due to the dense felted weave. The dense felted weave also creates a very smooth surface that seems less likely to pick everything up like the standard military issue wool blankets can do.I’m going to try using one soon to see if they really will perform like I expect. If I am dissatisfied I will add to this review, but as of now I expect them to be at least as warm as my military issue, which is pretty awesome. Like other similar wool blankets, it is relatively thin (if you aren’t used to this it might shock you), but don’t let that discourage you… these kinds of wool blankets don’t need to be very thick to work great, which is why they are so commonly used in military issue. They provide a surprising lot of warmth with minimal bulk. They work. Generally you can throw one of this type of wool blanket over the top of your normal blanket on a cold night when your normal blanket isn’t adequate and it immediately makes a huge difference, so I always keep one at the foot of the bed of each of my family members. I haven’t had an opportunity to try these out yet, but based on the look and feel I expect them to perform on par with the others warmth-wise, or perhaps better. Again, I’ll add to this review if they don’t live up to my expectations.So, based on my initial examination and observations, I highly recommend and believe that this is a great quality product for the price.
