This is a great strimmer
Bosch Cordless Grass Trimmer UniversalGrassCutThis strimmer was bought for garden use and for use on our allotment. Deciding to get the Bosch 18v model was largely determined by the fact that we already had a number of 18v Power4All batteries and charger. Before buying several reviews were read and these indicated some potential problems;⢠Assembly would be difficult. This was not the case. The only minor hiccup was the screw to lock the guard plate in position was a Torx head rather than the expected crosshead. However, the screw also had a position for a flat-head screwdriver and that was used to good effect.⢠Several reviewers suggested not fitting the plastic wheel. This is a must. Do not fit the wheel. Without the wheel, strimming is much more accurate and versatile. If you happen to have a paved edge identical to the Bosch advertising then I suppose the wheel could be useful but that is a very niche application.⢠Battery life was stated to be short. This review is based on using a 4Ah battery. The suggested one for the strimmer is 2.5Ah. Such a battery will be OK for strimming the edges of a small lawn but will be limiting for anything heavier. The 4Ah battery was used on some very heavy strimming for over 40 minutes and still had charge left.⢠The build quality was flimsy. Yes, this could probably be an issue. The machine was light and included a lot of plastic but this appeared to be of good quality. The foot pedal for adjusting the alignment of the strimming head does look flimsy and may cause problems if used frequently. Simple answer – don’t use it. For our applications it will be irrelevant.⢠The strimming filament was used up very quickly and was hard to extend. The jury is out on this one. For most of the test strimming the filament appeared to extend automatically to take up that which was lost due to strimming too close to wire netting or attempting to strim too thick vegetation. Manual extension was very easy – simply push in and pull out. However, after an extensive strimming session of heavy duty vegetation the filament began to snap. This was discovered to be due to the filament embedding in the remaining coils on the spool and becoming trapped so making it impossible to extend the filament without freeing the filament on the spool. To be fair, however, this problem has been encountered on every strimmer we have used and from a range of different manufacturers.⢠It was suggested that this strimmer could only handle light weight jobs, such as short grass on a lawn. At this it is excellent. The strimmer also can handle some quite heavy duty strimming and seems to be just as effective as a mains-powered strimmer. The test results were extremely favourable. To test this strimmer we used it to cut down an overgrown margin to our allotment. The allotment is bounded by 1″ chicken wire. Couch Grass, Nettles, Docks, Cow Parsnip had all made this their home for the last two years. The test was conducted at the beginning of September when the grass stems had died and were about 2′ tall. The nettles had also flowered and their stems were hard and fibrous. The strimmer cannot cut down very tall grass in one pass. One would need a brushwood cutter for that. If strimming is done in stages, cutting down a six inch depth in a single pass, say, and working slowly this overgrown border was reduced to about 1″ high. The strimmer would handle dead grass stems, living grass, dead Nettle stems and dead Cow Parsley stems. The only problem encountered was trying to cut old Dock flower stems that had not completely died. These though were very thick and needed secateurs to cut them down so no fault for the strimmer there.Without the wheel attached the actual cutting arc of the strimmer can be seen when cutting heavy vegetation. Slowly moving this into the cutting area allowed the strimmer to chew through the matted grass tussocks under precise control.During this use the strimmer motor remained cool and the battery was also cool. The ergonomics of the handle design are excellent. This is much more comfortable to use that other strimmers we have had. The strimmer also packs down for easy transport in the boot of our car.The only downside we have found to this strimmer is the need to hold the trigger switch in whilst strimming. This is a safety feature no doubt but in use there is a lot of pressure on the finger holding the switch in. In my case I have arthritis and holding that switch closed is uncomfortable.Other power tools I have include the option to latch the trigger switch. Pull the trigger to switch on, close the latch and pull the trigger to switch off. The inclusion of this system for this strimmer would be a huge improvement when doing a large strimming job.

good enough for most strimming
Battery life is fine. I managed to do front and back edge strims 3 times before recharge. I already have a spare battery as I have other Bosch 18v tools. The machine lacks the power of plug in rivals but to be fair it was good enough for lawn edging and a few border weeds which is as much as I need. It folds down quite small and is very light and mostly easy to use. there’s a pedal to change the head angle to do edging but I still need to end up getting my hands involved. Also the the ajustable main tube does not lock in the fully retracted position which is a bit of a nuisance. It does what I want it to though and a lot easier than extension leads and tripping over cables all the time.

First use and excellent performance
After reading reviews, I purchased this and the 4ah battery separately. Due to the package deal your getting the included charger for £5 less and the 2ah battery for nothing compared to buying them all separately. On first use I tried out the smaller battery to test it, as if I had just purchased this kit only. The grass had been cut the week before so not long at all, while the strimmer cut perfectly though the grass and when fully extended was very comfortable to use for me at 6ft 1, the battery as suspected didn’t last very long, it would be perfectly adequate if you just needed to trim the lawn edges or had a small garden say 20ft x 20ft but it would be no good as your only battery for longer grass, weeds or a larger garden like I have, in saying that it didn’t take that long to charge, 50min, but like most people I prefer to get the job done in one go, I would have preferred to be given the option to buy the 4ah battery as part of the package as it costs £60 on its own, so more than half the price of the strimmer only deal.I already had the Bosch 4ah (blue) pro batteries but sadly they are not compatible and have a completely different connection.

Excellent product, lightweight and easy to use.

I ordered this device without reading the reviews, because we are into the Bosch 18V ecosystem for our tools and are generally happy with them. Only later I read about the debatable build quality of this grass trimmer. However after receiving and unboxing I found ours sturdy. The production date on ours is March 2024 so I guess some improvements have been made since the bad reviews from last years. I did spray the small wheel axle with some white lithium grease to get it running freely and with little resistance. Through the Bosch websites I registered for 3 years warranty and I applied for the free extra battery deal that Bosch runs every spring, so I am awaiting an extra 3 Ah battery, and expecting at least 3+ years of good operations with no worries.
