The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has penalized Brian Hernandez Jr. for his ride aboard multiple grade 1-winning filly Thorpedo Anna in the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course.
In the ruling posted to its website, HISA has issued a fine of $1,250 and a one-day suspension of Hernandez. Frank Bernis, agent for Hernandez, said it was ruled that Hernandez struck Thorpedo Anna seven times with the riding crop while the rules allow for only six.
Bernis said Hernandez will not appeal the ruling and will serve his suspension Labor Day, Sept. 2.
After rating in fourth and saving ground through six furlongs under Hernandez, Thorpedo Anna would be tipped off the rail to set up her rally. In one of the great Travers finishes she then surged in the stretch to finish second, just a head behind winner Fierceness in the 1 1/4-mile test completed in 2:01.79 on a fast track.
Hernandez, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice jockey of 2004, already has enjoyed his top year with more than $12.8 million in purse earnings. In May he guided Mystik Dan to victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1) one day after capturing the Kentucky Oaks (G1) aboard Thorpedo Anna. She followed that score with two more grade 1 wins over fillies. Hernandez won the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) aboard Fort Larned .
